Salon and Barbershop Lighting Design: Getting Colour Right from Chair to Street
A salon is one of the few interiors where the lighting is part of the service being sold.
That makes it an unusually interesting brief. The light has to be accurate enough for a colourist to judge tone properly, and flattering enough that someone can sit in front of a mirror for two hours and enjoy what they see. Those two things pull in opposite directions, and resolving them is most of the work.
When it goes wrong, it usually shows up in the same way. The client loves the colour at the chair, pays, walks out, catches her reflection in a shop window, and the tone is not what she just approved.
The hair has not changed. The light has.
This guide covers how to get that right: what the standards actually require, how to zone colour temperature, why mirror lighting works or fails on geometry alone, and what to do about daylight. There is a specification checklist at the end you can take to a supplier.
A note on how figures are labelled. Where a number comes from a published standard, this guide names the standard, so you can hold a contractor to it. Where it is common industry practice, it says so. And where something follows from how light physically behaves, the reasoning is shown rather than asserted, so you can check it yourself, usually just by sitting in the chair and looking up.
Why Hair Colour Changes in Different Light
Colour is not something an object simply has. What you see is the light bouncing off it, which means the light source is half the equation. Change the light, change the colour.
Different light sources put out different amounts of energy across the spectrum. Warm light carries more energy at the red end. Daylight carries more at the blue end. So a tone mixed to look neutral under warm salon light will show a cooler cast outside, and an ash tone that looks perfect under one light can read green or muddy under another.
The technical name for this is metamerism: two colours that match under one light source but not another.
Three versions of it turn up in a salon.
The client's version. Colour matches at the chair, fails in the street. This is the shop window moment.
The disagreement version. Two people look at the same hair, in the same light, and describe it differently. This is real, not stubbornness. People genuinely vary in how their eyes respond to colour, so a stylist and a client can see different things and both be reporting honestly.
The angle version. Hair is shiny and directional, so colour reads differently along a strand depending on where the light comes from and where you stand. Strictly this is more about how hair reflects light than metamerism proper, but the effect on a colourist's day is the same.
You cannot design metamerism away. What you can do is make sure colour gets judged under light close enough to daylight that the shift between salon and street is small. That is what most of the decisions below are for.
What the Standards Say
Europe and the US take different approaches, so here is both.
Europe: BS EN 12464-1
Hairdressing has its own named entry in the European workplace lighting standard, which is unusual for a small commercial interior.

Two things stand out.
The colour rendering requirement is 90, not 80. Nearly everything else in the standard sits at 80: offices, shops, most factory work. Hairdressing is grouped with jewellery making. The standard is saying, in effect, that seeing colour accurately is part of the job here, not a nicety.
The glare limit of 19 is strict, the same as an office desk and tighter than a shop floor.
An honest note on editions. Those figures come from the 2002 version of the standard. The current one is BS EN 12464-1:2021, which reorganised the tables and added new requirements, including light on walls and ceilings and a measure called cylindrical illuminance, which is essentially how much light reaches a person's face from all directions. That last one is very relevant to salons. The standard is paywalled, which is exactly why older figures circulate freely online. If you are specifying for compliance, work from a current copy rather than any summary, including this one.
United States: IES
The US has no equivalent legal standard. The Illuminating Engineering Society publishes recommendations, which codes and clients reference but which are not law in themselves.
The IES lists Barber Shops and Beauty Parlors at 50 to 100 footcandles, roughly 538 to 1,076 lux. These figures come from widely circulated summaries of the IES Lighting Handbook, 10th edition. The 11th is current, so the same advice applies: check a current copy if compliance matters.

The two are broadly compatible. The US range starts a little above the European floor and goes about twice as high at the top, which leaves room for the brighter colour work areas below.
The Four Numbers That Matter
1. Light level
500 lux minimum at the styling station. Measure it at the face, not the floor.
That second part matters more than it sounds, and it is geometry rather than opinion. Most lighting gets specified as light landing on a horizontal surface. A face is vertical. So a salon can hit its number on the floor and still leave faces in shadow, and it will pass on paper while being useless to work in.
2. CRI
CRI scores how accurately a light shows colour, out of 100.
CRI 90 minimum everywhere people work, 95 or above where colour is mixed and checked. CRI 80, which is what inexpensive commercial fixtures give you, is fine for a waiting area and not fine anywhere the work happens.
3. R9
This is the one most people miss, and in a salon it may be the most important of the four.
CRI is an average of eight test colours, and none of them is a strong red. R9 measures deep red separately, and it does not count toward the CRI figure. So a light can score CRI 90 and still render reds badly.
Follow that through and the consequence is obvious. Coppers, auburns, warm browns and the warm undertones in most skin all depend on red rendering. A light with good CRI and poor R9 will make copper look flat and clients look washed out in the mirror, while its spec sheet looks fine.
Common practice is to specify R9 above 50 as a minimum and above 80 at colour stations. Ask for the number directly, because manufacturers measure it but rarely print it on the front of a spec sheet.
4. Glare
UGR 19 or lower.
Then do something the number cannot do for you: check the fixture from both positions before committing. Sit in the chair like a client. Stand behind it like a stylist. Both see the mirror, and a fixture that is comfortable from one position is not automatically comfortable from the other.
Colour Temperature: Zone It
Warm light flatters. It makes skin look healthy and the room feel welcoming, and it adds yellow to everything, which means colour judged under it reads cooler outside.
Daylight-range light tells the truth. Hair reads much closer to how it will read in the street. It is also less flattering and less pleasant to sit under for two hours.
You do not have to choose. Zone the salon instead.

This zoning is industry practice, not a standard. Neither BS EN 12464-1 nor the IES mandates a colour temperature for salons. Both set light levels, glare and colour rendering and leave CCT to the designer. Treat the table as a well established starting point.
Two things to get right.
Skip 6,500K as room lighting. It is often marketed as maximum accuracy, but skin reads sallow and hair reads flat under it. The gain in nominal fidelity is not worth what it does to how people look.
This is worth separating clearly, because it sounds like a contradiction and is not. 6,500K is D65, the international reference for measuring colour, and you will see it recommended everywhere for colour-critical work. But that reference is used in enclosed viewing booths, where a small sample is assessed for a few seconds against a neutral grey surround. A salon is a room where people sit for two hours and look at their own faces. Those are different jobs, and the same colour temperature does not serve both.
Change temperature at a boundary, not in the middle of a room. The reason is straightforward: if a client can see two different colour temperatures at the same time, she watches her hair change as she walks between them, and she will blame the colour rather than the lighting. Put the change at a bulkhead, a doorway, a level change, anything that reads as a division between rooms.
The Mirror
This is where most salons go wrong, and the reason is pure geometry.
Light from above does not work. When the main light comes from the ceiling or from above the mirror, it arrives at the face steeply from overhead. The brow, the nose and the chin each block it and throw a shadow straight down. You get dark eye sockets, a shadow under the nose, and a hard line under the jaw.
Turning it up makes this worse, not better. A brighter source at the same angle casts a harder shadow.
Light from the sides does work. Put a source on each side of the mirror at roughly face height and the two beams fill each other's shadows. The face is lit evenly from the front.
This is why theatre dressing room mirrors have bulbs around the edge rather than above. It is not a style choice, it is how you light a face without carving shadows into it.
One thing specific to salons. Salon chairs are height-adjustable, and stylists move them constantly through a service. A wall light fixed at one height is at face level for one chair position and wrong for the rest.
That points to a solution: vertical strips either side of the mirror, which stay effective across the full range of chair heights rather than being correct once.
Whatever you use, diffuse it. A bare lamp at face height glares into the client's eyes and reflects in the mirror, and the stylist looks into it all day.
Add some soft light from above as well, but keep it secondary. A little downward light gives hair shape and shows how it falls. Front light for the face, gentle top light for the hair, in that order.
Daylight: The Reference That Will Not Sit Still
Everything above assumes you control the light. A salon with big windows does not.
This matters because daylight is both the thing you are trying to match and the least stable light source in the building.
Daylight is not one colour temperature
The CIE, the international body for colour science, defines a series of standard daylight illuminants. Each one represents a different phase of natural light:

There is a reason there are four of them rather than one. The CIE states directly that daylight's spectral distribution varies with season, time of day, and geographic location.
So when a client says her colour looked different outside, the honest answer is: outside is not a fixed condition either. It was one thing at her 9am appointment and something else when she left at noon.
This is also why 5,000K is the common recommendation for a colour mixing area. It sits at D50, which is the reference used in printing and graphic arts under ISO 3664. It is close enough to daylight to be useful and warm enough that people can work under it all day. It is a working compromise, not a perfect match, and it is worth understanding it that way.
Windows create a second, competing scheme
Here is the geometric problem, and it follows directly from the mirror section above.
Faces need frontal light. But styling stations are very often placed along a window wall, because that is where the natural light is and it looks wonderful in photographs. In that arrangement, daylight reaches the client from the side or from behind, not from the front.
The consequence is that a salon like this has two different lighting conditions in the same room. After dark, the mirror lighting works exactly as designed. During the day, it is competing with a much stronger, differently coloured source arriving from the wrong direction.
Neither condition is wrong. They just need to be designed as two conditions rather than one.
What to do about it
Put the colour check point away from direct daylight. If there is one position in the salon where tone gets judged before the client leaves, it should be a controlled position: a wall away from glazing, lit at a known colour temperature, giving the same answer at 9am and 5pm. Colour matching standards such as ISO 3668 and ASTM D1729 specify enclosed, controlled viewing conditions precisely because daylight cannot be relied on. A salon is not a laboratory, but the principle carries: if the judgement matters, control the light rather than trusting the window.
Specify shading that can actually be used. Blinds or sheers on any glazing near colour work, operable by staff, not decorative. The point is not to block daylight permanently but to be able to remove it from the equation when tone is being assessed.
Keep direct sun off working positions. Direct sunlight is intense, warm, moving and directional. It is not a colour reference, it is a problem. In the northern hemisphere, north-facing glazing gives softer, more stable skylight without direct sun, which is why artists' studios have traditionally faced north. South-facing glazing needs shading. In the southern hemisphere, reverse this.
Check the room twice. Once in daylight, once after dark. A salon that only works in one of those conditions is only half designed.
The Shampoo Station
Here is a check you can run in any salon in about ten seconds.
Sit in a shampoo chair. Lean back as if you are having your hair washed. Look up.
Whatever is on that ceiling is what the client looks at for fifteen minutes. In most salons, it is a downlight.
The shampoo is often the only genuinely relaxing part of a visit. A bright source directly in the eyeline undoes it, and no amount of good design elsewhere compensates.
What works instead:
- Nothing directly above the reclined head position. Move it, or light the walls instead.
- Keep levels low, around 150 to 200 lux, and dimmable.
- Keep it warm, 2,700 to 3,000K.
- Use indirect sources: cove lighting, wall washing, concealed perimeter light. Light the surfaces, not the face.
- Give staff their own task light, positioned behind or beside the basin, so they can see without lighting the client's eyes.

Specification Checklist
Take this to a supplier or a contractor.
Ask the supplier for:
- CRI (Ra) figure for every fixture. Minimum 90 at working positions, 95+ at colour stations.
- R9 figure, separately. Minimum 50, target 80+ at colour stations. Insist on this one, it is usually omitted.
- UGR data. Target 19 or lower at stations.
- Colour temperature per fixture, confirmed at order stage, not assumed.
- Colour consistency between fixtures. Ask about SDCM or binning tolerance. Two fixtures of the same nominal temperature can look visibly different.
- Dimming compatibility, confirmed against the specific dimmer being used.
Check on site before signing off:
- Measure at face height at a styling station, not at floor level.
- Sit in the styling chair. Can you see a bare lamp or a glare source?
- Stand where the stylist stands. Same question.
- Sit in the shampoo chair and lean back. What is directly above you?
- Stand at reception and look toward the colour area. Can you see two colour temperatures at once?
- Look at a colour swatch at the mixing bar, then at a window. How far does it shift?
- Visit twice, once in daylight and once after dark. Does the room work both times?
- At the colour check position, can daylight be shut out when needed?
- Does direct sun land on any working position at any point in the day?
Seven Mistakes to Avoid
1. One colour temperature everywhere. No single setting serves both a relaxing reception and a colour mixing bar.
2. Asking for CRI and forgetting R9. CRI 90 tells you nothing about reds, which is exactly where coppers, auburns and skin undertones live.
3. Lighting the mirror from above. Dark eye sockets and a hard jaw line, every time. More brightness makes it worse.
4. A downlight over the shampoo basin. The client is lying down looking straight at it.
5. Colour temperature changing mid-room. Put the change at a wall or a doorway, never in an open sightline.
6. Specifying to the floor instead of the face. A salon can meet its lux target on the floor and still leave faces in shadow.
7. Designing for one time of day. A salon with large windows has two lighting conditions, daylight and after dark. Check both before signing off.

Is barbershop lighting different from salon lighting? The colour-critical part is lighter, since barbershops do mostly cutting rather than colour, so a dedicated 5,000K mixing area is often unnecessary. Everything else carries over. Cutting needs precise vision of line and detail, so the same 500 lux and CRI 90 apply. Side lighting at the mirror still gives a more accurate reflection than overhead light, for the same geometric reason. Glare still matters for someone facing a mirror all day. Barbershops also tend toward warmer, darker schemes, which makes the contrast between a moody ambient layer and a properly specified task layer more important rather than less.
