Home Office Lighting: Why Your Desk Is in the Wrong Place

A colleague asks if you are feeling all right. You slept fine. You feel fine. You just look grey on camera and you have no idea why.

It is almost never the webcam. It is the window behind you.

And here is where lighting a home office gets strange.

Ask an ergonomist where to put a desk and they will tell you the window belongs to your side. Ask anyone who works in video and they will tell you it belongs in front of you.

Both are right. They are solving different problems, and your desk is being asked to do both jobs at once.

Nobody puts those two answers side by side, because they come from completely different worlds. So most people follow one and quietly live with the other: the screen that washes out by mid afternoon, or the colleague asking if you are getting enough sleep.

This guide is about settling that argument, and about the handful of other decisions that actually determine whether a room is comfortable to work in all day.


Where the Desk Goes

Start here, because where the desk sits matters more than anything you buy afterwards.

The window goes to your left or right, at 90 degrees to the screen. This is what ergonomics guidance has settled on, and OSHA's advice for computer workstations says it plainly: place the monitor perpendicular to the window.

Here is what the other two options actually do to you.

Facing the window puts a bright field directly behind your screen. Your pupils keep adjusting between the glass and the darker display, all day. It is a small effort repeated thousands of times, and it is tiring in a way that is hard to point at.

Backing onto the window turns the screen into a mirror. Daylight bounces off the panel and washes out whatever is on it, and turning up the brightness never wins that fight.

Perpendicular gives you the daylight without either problem. It is the position ergonomics guidance has settled on, and it is the right default for a desk.

If the desk cannot move, rotate the screen. Even a 20 to 30 degree swivel often moves a reflection out of your line of sight without disturbing your posture. Blinds or sheer curtains are the next lever, and they matter more than most people expect, because the sun moves and a position that works at 10am can fail completely at 3pm.

While you are there, OSHA's computer workstation guidance gives three more figures worth having. The monitor should sit at least 51cm (20 inches) away, with a preferred viewing range of 50 to 100cm (20 to 40 inches). The top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level, and the centre of the screen roughly 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level.

One point about tilt that gets repeated incorrectly. You tilt a screen back, by no more than 10 to 20 degrees, so that it sits perpendicular to your line of sight, which is angled slightly downward. That is the reason. It is not a glare fix, and OSHA specifically warns the opposite: tilting a monitor back can create glare by aiming the screen up at your ceiling lights. If tilting introduces a reflection, the answer is to deal with the ceiling fixture, not to keep adjusting the screen.


The Video Call Problem

Now the second rule, and why it fights the first.

A webcam sensor is small, and it sets exposure for the brightest region in the frame. Sit with a window behind you and the camera exposes for the glass. Your face, being far darker than the window, drops into shadow. It is widely described as the most common video call lighting error, and it has nothing to do with the camera.

Overhead light alone causes the other half of the problem. A ceiling fixture above you throws light down onto your brow, nose and chin, and each of those casts a shadow directly beneath itself. You get dark eye sockets and a hard line under the jaw. It is exactly the same geometry that makes a bathroom mirror unflattering when lit from above, and small camera sensors exaggerate it.

Both problems point in the same direction: light needs to come from in front of your face, at roughly face height. A lamp with a diffusing shade behind the monitor and aimed at you, a light bar clipped to the top of the screen, or a window doing the job during daylight hours.

But the two problems are not equally solvable with a lamp, and this is worth being clear about, because a lot of advice glosses over it.

Overhead shadows are genuinely fixed by a front light. It fills them in, and a modest lamp is enough.

A silhouette is different. You are competing with a window, and a window will usually win. A desk lamp bright enough to balance a sunlit window would be uncomfortable to sit behind. So the real fix for a silhouette is to reduce the window rather than out-gun it: close the blinds during calls, or turn the desk. The front light then handles what is left.


How to Satisfy Both Rules

The resolution is straightforward once the conflict is stated plainly.

Keep the desk perpendicular to the window. That is the right default, because you spend far more hours looking at a screen than looking at a camera. Ergonomics wins the permanent decision.

Add a controllable front light for calls. A small diffused source behind the monitor, at face height, aimed at you. It fills the shadows an overhead fixture creates, it gives the camera something to expose for, and it can be switched off when you are not on a call.

Two details that make the difference between adequate and good:

Position it slightly off centre rather than dead ahead. A light directly in front flattens the face. Slightly to one side keeps some dimension.

Match the colour temperature to everything else in the room. A warm desk lamp mixed with a cooler ceiling fixture produces a visible split colour cast on camera that no software correction fully removes. This matters more on video than it does to your eye, because your brain adapts to mixed light and a camera does not.

If the window genuinely has to be behind you, and sometimes the room gives no choice, close the blinds during calls and let the front light do the work. Fighting a window with a lamp rarely wins.


Light Levels and Specification

A note before the numbers. EN 12464-1, the European workplace lighting standard, sets lighting requirements for offices. A home office is generally not covered by it unless it is a formal registered workplace, so the figures below are well established design targets rather than legal requirements for a room in your house. Check local regulations if the space is a formal place of work.

How much light

The widely cited figure for office desk work under EN 12464-1 is 500 lux at the working plane, measured at desk height rather than on the floor, alongside a glare limit of UGR 19 and uniformity of 0.6.

Two honest caveats. Sources differ, with some citing lower figures for screen-only work where the display provides its own light. And more importantly, this is a workplace standard. Your spare room is not legally bound by it. Treat 500 lux as a well established target for comfortable desk work rather than a requirement.

The 2021 revision of the standard introduced the idea of raising levels where visual work is demanding or the user is older, though published summaries disagree on the specific multipliers, so treat any precise age figure you see with caution. The direction is sound: older eyes need more light, and it is worth designing in the ability to increase levels rather than fixing them.

Above roughly 750 to 1,000 lux, returns diminish and glare risk rises, particularly on a screen.

Uniformity matters more than the headline number

A room averaging 500 lux with 800 lux under the fixture and 200 lux between them is worse than a room at an even 400. Hot spots create glare, dark zones create strain, and the average conceals both. This is why a single bright ceiling fixture is a poor solution for a home office even when the lux meter reads correctly directly beneath it.

Colour temperature

3500K to 4000K suits a home office better than the warmer light used elsewhere in a house. Neutral light supports alertness during the working day without reading as clinical.

If the room doubles as a guest room or is visible from a living space, tunable white is worth considering, running neutral during the day and dropping to 2700K in the evening so the room rejoins the rest of the house.

Whatever you choose, keep it consistent across every source in the room, for the camera reason above and because mixed colour temperature in a small room is visible and unsettling.

CRI

Ra 90 or above. The light falling on your face is what the camera has to render, so poor colour rendering shows up on every call as skin that looks flat or slightly grey. It matters in the room too, on fabric, print, artwork or samples. Ra 80 sources make all of it look duller than it is.


The Task Lamp Mistake

Most people put the desk lamp beside the monitor. It is the obvious spot, and it is the wrong one, because it throws light directly across the face of the screen and produces a bright reflection sitting on top of whatever you are reading.

Two positions work better.

Behind the monitor, angled down onto the desk surface, keyboard and any paperwork. Light reaches what you need lit without touching the screen.

A monitor light bar, clipped to the top of the display and angled down onto the desk. These exist specifically because the geometry of a desk makes conventional lamps awkward, and they light the working surface without reflecting off the panel.

On handedness: for handwriting, a lamp on the opposite side to your writing hand prevents your own hand shadowing the page. Right handed, lamp on the left.


Home Office Lighting Checklist

Position

  • Desk perpendicular to the window, not facing it and not backing onto it
  • Monitor at least 51cm (20 in) from your eyes, preferred range 50 to 100cm
  • Top of screen at or slightly below seated eye level
  • Screen centre roughly 15 to 20 degrees below horizontal eye level
  • Screen tilted back no more than 10 to 20 degrees, and checked for ceiling reflections afterwards

Before you settle in

  • Sit at the desk at 10am and again at 3pm. Does the screen wash out?
  • Turn everything on and look at the screen. Can you see a lamp reflected in it?
  • Open a video call preview. Is your face lit, or are you a silhouette?
  • Check for flicker: film the room briefly on a phone and look for banding.

Six Mistakes in Home Office Lighting

1. Backing onto the window. Turns the screen into a mirror and turns you into a silhouette on camera. It manages to fail both rules at once.

2. Facing the window. Better than backing onto it, but your eyes spend all day adjusting between bright glass and a darker screen.

3. One ceiling fixture and nothing else. Creates overhead shadows on your face, uneven light on the desk, and glare on the screen depending on where you sit.

4. Desk lamp beside the monitor. The most common task lighting error. Puts a reflection directly on the panel. Move it behind the screen.

5. Mixed colour temperatures. Invisible to your eye, because your brain adapts. Very visible on camera as a split colour cast.

6. Chasing the average lux figure. Even light at 400 lux beats a hot spot and a dark corner averaging 500.

Most home office discomfort traces back to the relationship between the screen and the window, and a 90 degree turn fixes glare, reflection and eye strain in one move without spending anything. After that, adding a small diffused light at face height behind the monitor solves both the video call problem and the overhead shadow problem simultaneously.
