Most dining room pendants are hung too high, usually by about a hand's width.
It sounds trivial. It is not. At the right height, a pendant draws a clear pool of light around the table and the room gathers around it. A little higher and the light spreads thin, the fixture drifts away from the table, and the room stops having a centre. The furniture has not moved. The fixture has not changed. It just does not work, and it is difficult to say why.
The useful part is that this is one of the few things in lighting with a settled answer, and it needs a tape measure rather than a calculation.
This guide covers that measurement, how to size the fixture to your table, and the three layers that have to sit around the pendant before a dining room really works.
How High to Hang It
This is the question everyone asks, and unusually for lighting, the sources all agree.
The bottom of the fixture should sit 76 to 91cm (30 to 36 inches) above the table surface, measured on a standard 2.4m (8 ft) ceiling.
For higher ceilings, add roughly 8cm (3 inches) for every additional 30cm (1 ft) of ceiling height.

Why that range, specifically
The rule is not arbitrary. Once you know why it works, you can adapt it when your room does not match the figures above.
At 76 to 91cm above the table, the fixture sits above the eye line of a seated person but below the sightline of someone standing across the room. That one relationship handles three problems at the same time.
Seated diners are not staring into the source, because the fixture is above their eye level. People can see each other across the table, because the fixture is high enough not to block the view. And nobody standing up hits their head on it.
Go higher and the light spreads thin and the fixture stops belonging to the table. Go lower and you are eating dinner inside a lampshade.
Three adjustments worth knowing:
Large or heavy fixtures want the upper end of the range, or slightly above it, so they do not dominate the table.
Slim or delicate fixtures can sit lower, closer to 76cm, which makes the room feel more intimate.
Bar-height tables need more clearance, roughly 86 to 102cm (34 to 40 inches), because the surface itself starts higher.
The mistake people actually make when ordering
The hanging height is not the same as the drop length you order.
The fixture body takes up vertical space, so the rod or chain has to be shorter than the gap you want to leave.
To work it out, start with your ceiling height, then subtract three things:
- The height of the table
- The clearance you want above it, so 76 to 91cm
- The height of the fixture body itself
What is left is the drop length to order.
Get this wrong and the fixture arrives at the wrong height with no way to fix it. Rod-mounted fixtures are usually a fixed length, unlike chain or cable, which can be shortened on site.
How to Size It
Two sizing formulas circulate widely, and they routinely give different answers for the same room. Worth knowing before you trust either.
Formula one, scaled to the table. The fixture diameter should be one half to two thirds of the table width. This is the more reliable of the two, because it keeps the fixture visually tied to the surface it is lighting.

Formula two, scaled to the room. Add the room's length and width in feet, and read the total as inches of diameter. A 12 by 14 foot room gives 26 inches, roughly 66cm. Note this one only works in imperial units.
The second formula ignores the table completely, which is why the two often disagree. When they do, follow the table. The fixture's job is to light and anchor the table, and in open plan rooms especially, the table is often nowhere near the centre of the space. Size to the room and you can end up with a fixture that suits the floor plan and looks wrong over the thing it is actually lighting.
Rectangular tables need a different answer
A single round fixture over a long rectangular table lights the middle and leaves the ends dim. Two options work better:
A linear suspension running along the table's length, which distributes light evenly end to end.
Three to five pendants spaced along the table, each roughly one eighth to one sixth of the table length in diameter, all hung at the same standard height.
The Pendant Is Not the Scheme
Get the height right and the pendant will do its job beautifully. It still will not be enough.
A dining room lit only by a pendant is a bright table floating in a dark room. It photographs well and it is strange to sit in. The walls vanish, faces are lit from directly overhead, and there is nowhere for the eye to go once you look up from your plate.
A dining room needs at least three layers.
The pendant or chandelier is decorative and task light combined. It anchors the room and lights the table.
Ambient light fills in the room around it so the walls and corners are not black. Wall lights, a small amount of perimeter downlighting, or light spilling from an adjacent space all work. This layer should be quiet, well below the pendant in intensity.
Accent light gives the room depth. A sideboard lamp, lighting inside a display cabinet, a picture light, or a wall wash on a textured surface. This is the layer that makes a dining room feel designed rather than just lit.
A note on downlights. Recessed downlights directly above a dining table are common, and they rarely help. They light the tops of people's heads, cast shadows into eye sockets, and compete with the pendant. If downlights are used in a dining room, keep them away from directly above the table and put them on a separate circuit.
Colour Temperature, CRI and Dimming
Colour temperature
2700K, and do not go above 3000K.
This is not only about atmosphere. Above 3000K, food begins to look grey and unappetising, and meat is affected most. The same warm light that flatters a room also flatters what is on the plate.
Warmer still is worth considering. 2200K to 2700K is the range good restaurants tend to work in, because warm light encourages people to relax and stay, while cooler light raises alertness. That is warmer than most homes, and it is a large part of why a dining room can feel flat when a restaurant does not.
Go dimmer than instinct suggests, too. A dining table needs far less light than most people give it. Published figures for restaurant dining vary by source but sit consistently low, broadly in the region of 50 to 150 lux at the table. Treat that as a direction rather than a target: the atmosphere comes from dimming down, not from adding fixtures.
Keep it consistent. If the dining area is open to a kitchen, the two need to match or the boundary between them becomes visible. This matters more in open plan layouts than almost anywhere else in a house.
CRI
CRI 90 minimum. Below that, reds are under-rendered, which affects meat, tomatoes, wine and skin tone simultaneously. Every one of those is on a dining table.
Ask for the R9 value separately as well. R9 measures deep red rendering and is excluded from the headline CRI figure, so a source can score CRI 90 and still make food look flat. It is the same specification point that matters in a bakery, a butcher's counter and a restaurant, and for the same reason.
Dimming
Dimming is not a luxury here, it is what makes the room multi-purpose. The same table hosts breakfast, homework, a Tuesday dinner and a long evening with friends. Those are four different rooms, and dimming is what turns one into the other.
Put each layer on its own circuit, so the pendant, the ambient layer and the accent layer can be balanced independently. A dining room where everything dims together on one dimmer is far less useful than it sounds.
Specify trailing-edge dimmers for LED loads. Leading-edge dimmers, designed for incandescent lamps, commonly cause visible flicker and audible buzz with LED drivers.

- Sit opposite someone. Does the fixture block the view across the table?
- Dim it right down. Does it stay smooth, or does it flicker and drop out?
Six Mistakes in Dining Room Lighting
1. Hanging it too high. The most common error by far, usually by 10 to 20cm. The fixture drifts away from the table, the pool of light spreads thin, and the room loses its focus without anyone being able to say why.
2. Cool white light. Above 3000K, food looks grey and the room reads as a canteen. It is the single fastest way to make an expensive dining room feel cheap.
3. Sizing to the room instead of the table. The two common formulas disagree, and the table is the one that matters.
4. The pendant as the only light. A bright table in a dark room. Faces lit from above, walls invisible, nowhere for the eye to go.
5. Downlights directly over the table. They light the tops of heads, throw shadows into eye sockets and fight the pendant.
6. No dimming, or everything on one dimmer. A dining room has at least four different uses. One fixed setting serves none of them well.
