Stand on one side of a bar counter and you want atmosphere. Low light, warm, faces looking their best, a room that feels like evening no matter what time it is.
Stand a metre away on the other side and you have to pour a 25ml measure accurately, read a ticket, check a card, identify a bottle by its label and see whether a glass is clean.
Same strip of space. Two completely incompatible briefs.
That conflict is the whole subject, and it is why bar lighting fails differently from restaurant lighting. A restaurant can put light on the table and darkness everywhere else, and everyone is served. A bar has a working kitchen and a lounge occupying the same two metres, facing each other.
And this is not only a designer's observation. Published descriptions of the European workplace lighting standard indicate it treats those two sides as different problems in the same room, setting requirements for the area where staff work while declining to prescribe a level for the guest space. More on that below, along with an honest note on how far those descriptions can be relied upon.
There is a second thing a bar does that no other hospitality space does, and it inverts the rule that governs dining rooms entirely.
The Back Bar Is the Brightest Thing in the Room
In a restaurant, the table is where the light goes. The article on restaurant lighting makes the case: light the table, let the room fall away, and the darkness between tables is what creates intimacy.
A bar does the opposite. The brightest element is not horizontal and it is not where the guest sits. It is a vertical wall of bottles behind the counter, and published guidance on bar design is consistent that it should be the focal point of the room.
Three reasons that matters more than it sounds.
It is the orientation device. People walking into an unfamiliar room look for the brightest thing and move toward it. In a bar, that should be the counter, because that is where the transaction happens.
It is the merchandising. The back bar is inventory on display, and lit shelving turns a row of bottles into something that looks considered. Unlit shelving makes the same bottles read as storage.
And it is what guests look at for two hours. Someone sitting at a bar is facing that wall. Not a companion across a table, not a view, a lit shelf of glass at roughly eye level, continuously.
Which makes it the single most important surface in the room, and the one most often lit badly.
Lighting the Back Bar Without Blinding Anyone
Three approaches appear consistently in published guidance, and they suit different concepts.
LED strip behind the shelf, lighting the bottles from behind so the liquid glows. The most common approach and the easiest to integrate. Published guidance suggests keeping it warm, around 2400K to 2700K, so labels read naturally rather than being tinted.
Small spots under each shelf, aimed down at the bottles below. More directional and more expensive, and it reads as a premium detail rather than a glow.
Fully backlit shelving, with an illuminated panel behind the bottles. Dramatic, common in hotel bars and cocktail lounges, and the most likely to become a glare source if the panel luminance is not controlled.
The glare test that matters: sit on a bar stool and look straight ahead for a minute. If any part of the back bar is uncomfortable to look at, it is too bright, because that is the view a guest holds for the length of their visit. A back bar that photographs beautifully from three metres away can be unpleasant to sit in front of.
Bottles and glassware are specular, so they reflect sources rather than diffusing them. A bright point source will appear as a hard highlight in every bottle on the shelf and in the glassware hanging above it. Diffuse sources generally read better here than point sources, and where spots are used they should be small, well shielded and consistent.
The Bartender Problem
This is the part that gets forgotten, and published guidance names it directly as a common failure: the customer-facing lighting is romantic and the bartender cannot see what they are pouring.
The work behind a bar is genuinely detailed. Measuring, garnishing, reading tickets, identifying bottles by label in a row of similar shapes, checking glassware, handling payment, and in many jurisdictions verifying age from a document. None of that is possible at cocktail lounge ambient levels.
The resolution is task light that the guest never sees.
Under-shelf lighting on the working side, concealed by the shelf above so the source is invisible from the guest side of the counter but the work surface is properly lit.
Under-counter lighting at the bar's kick and the bartender's working edge. Published guidance notes this doubles as a design feature, giving the bar a floating quality while doing useful work.
Slightly cooler than the room, commonly around 3000K against a 2200K to 2700K ambient. Cool enough to support accuracy, close enough not to read as a different room when seen from the front.
And a brighter setting for the hours nobody is drinking. Setting up, cleaning down, stock takes and deliveries all need considerably more light than service. That is a scene, not a compromise on the service setting.
One design consequence worth flagging early. All of that concealed task lighting lives inside joinery, which means the lighting detail belongs in the bar fabrication drawings. A back bar built without provision for a strip and a return cannot have one added afterwards without dismantling it.
The Standard Splits the Room in Two
Here is the thing that turns this from an observation into a design principle, and it is worth knowing before anyone tells you bars are unregulated.
EN 12464-1, the European workplace lighting standard, covers restaurants and hotels. That much is stated consistently across sources describing the standard's scope.
And it treats the guest side and the working side differently. A published description of the standard's restaurant provisions notes that it distinguishes several areas within the premises, sets illuminance requirements for the areas where staff work, and declines to set a level for the dining space itself, indicating instead only that the light should be sufficient to create the appropriate atmosphere.
That distinction is the important part, and it is the whole argument of this article expressed as regulation. The standard refuses to prescribe atmosphere, and it does prescribe the working area.
So a bar is not an unregulated space. It is a space where the regulation stops at the counter.
A necessary caution on the numbers
Descriptions of the specific figures are harder to pin down than the principle.
One published account of the restaurant provisions gives around 300 lux for tills and staff working areas, around 500 lux for the kitchen, and a general minimum near 100 lux with a glare limit of UGR 22 for the dining space. That account is a single source describing a national adoption of the standard, and this article has not been able to corroborate those particular values against a second independent description or against the standard itself, which is not freely available.
Treat the figures as indicative and the principle as sound. If a project requires compliance, obtain a current copy of the standard applicable in the jurisdiction, or take the figures from a lighting engineer who has one. Do not specify from this article, or from any summary, where compliance is at stake.
What you can rely on regardless
The working side of your bar is a workplace. Whatever the exact figure, workplace lighting requirements apply behind the counter in a way they do not in front of it, and that is a useful position when an operator wants the entire room at candlelight levels.
Published descriptions of the 2021 revision also note that levels may be increased a step where aggravating factors exist, including low contrast in the environment and reduced eyesight among staff. A dim bar with dark joinery is low contrast by definition, which is an argument for treating the working area generously.
And emergency lighting applies to the whole room. Licensed premises are subject to escape route and anti-panic requirements, commonly described as at least 1 lux along escape route centre lines and at least 0.5 lux in open areas above 60 square metres. Emergency lighting operates independently of the dimming system and must reach full output during a power failure, however low the ambient scene is set.
Levels, Colour and Drinks
Ambient runs lower here than almost any interior. Published guidance for cocktail lounges commonly suggests 2200K to 2700K, warmer than the 2700K to 3000K typical of restaurants, on the basis that warmth encourages people to linger. Concepts built on turnover rather than lingering, sports bars and casual venues, are often specified cooler and brighter, which is a business model decision as much as a design one.
Treat the guest-side figures as design practice, since the standard explicitly leaves atmosphere to the designer, and published colour temperature guidance varies between sources. The working side is different, and the figures in the previous section carry the weight of a workplace standard rather than a preference.
Colour rendering matters for a reason people underestimate. A cocktail is a coloured liquid in a glass, often the only saturated colour in a dark room, and it is photographed constantly. Poor colour rendering makes an amber drink look brown and a red one look muddy. Specify CRI 90 minimum and request R9 separately, since deep red is excluded from the headline figure and is exactly what a negroni depends on.
Be careful with coloured light. Saturated colour is common in bar lighting and it has a specific cost: green and blue tints make drinks and food look unappetising. Where colour is part of the concept, keep it off the drinks and off the faces, and make sure the default white setting is a good warm white, because that is what runs most of the time.
Faces matter as much as drinks. People sit at a bar for hours being looked at. Light arriving only from overhead produces the same shadowed eye sockets it produces at a bathroom mirror. Some frontal light, whether from the back bar wash, from sconces opposite, or from a warm pendant, is what stops guests looking tired.

Six Mistakes
1. Forgetting the bartender. The guest side is atmospheric and the working side cannot see. Concealed task light solves it, and it has to be planned into the joinery.
2. An unlit back bar. The bottles read as storage rather than as a display, and the room loses its orientation point.
3. A back bar bright enough to be uncomfortable. Guests look at it continuously. Test it from a stool, not from across the room.
4. Overhead-only light on guests. Shadowed eye sockets and a hard jaw line, for two hours, in a room where people are being looked at.
5. Treating the whole room as unregulated. The guest side is a matter of atmosphere, but the working side of the counter is a workplace and workplace lighting requirements apply to it.
6. Coloured light on the drinks. Green and blue tints make a cocktail look wrong, which is the one thing a bar cannot afford.
